Although I enjoy fresh ground coffee our house is small and the grinder disrupts the morning silence. Silence — this is the reason I rise early. There’s something peaceful about a quiet house when you’ve just woken up. Getting up before the kid and sipping coffee alone feeds my introverted nature. As the Italians would say, “dolce far niente” - the sweetness of doing nothing.
It’s the perfect time to write. Writing without distraction allows my thoughts to flow freely across the page. Yes, I am writing this in a little journal of writing prompts before I think I may publish it. That’s the thing about writing, it sometimes feels conversational to me — like you are here and I’m telling you a story. I think good writing flows like that.
As I’m putting these thoughts together the coffee is brewing next to me. This morning I used pre ground organic decaf. Yes, I prefer decaf. It’s really just the taste of coffee I love.
I fill my oversized mug. The entire contents of the french press nearly fit. Before I left the kitchen I added a generous splash of half and half.
When you add coffee to half and half or heavy cream the coffee and cream stir themselves. However if you add the cream second you’ll need to stir it.
It’s little things like this, how our world works, that fascinates me.
Yes, some would say I’m a bit odd. I enjoy a quiet morning all alone, drinking decaf, pondering the interactions between coffee and cream.
Quiet mornings are a place where I can be with myself, my thoughts, eccentricities, and no one has to see or know. Perhaps this is why I find it so peaceful. It’s a gentle intro to the day where I’ve had time for me before the day takes me away into the constant busyness of mom life.
Recently I’ve been receiving the Sunday newspaper. Yes, an actual newspaper. It reminds me of being a kid who always headed straight for the comic section.
The somewhat grown version of me now reads many of the articles. There’s something special about getting news this way. I’m not sure if it’s the smell of the paper or the fact that it’s bigger than a phone screen but no matter what I’m reading it somehow feels more peaceful.
I do still look over the comics but they’re not as exciting as they used to be. Maybe I’m missing Silly Putty?
Instead I spend most of my time working Sudoku puzzles, the word find, finding the differences in 2 drawings, and building words from jumbled 3 letter clues.
Occasionally I’ll try my hand at a crossword but I don’t think I’ve ever completed one. I like to believe it’s because I’m too much of an over thinker so I just don’t come up with the right words because I can see so many possibilities, LOL!!!
Either way, the Sunday newspaper and cup of coffee is something I’ve come to look forward to.
How do you enjoy your Sunday mornings?
Health is about more than calories and diets. You also need to find moments to nurture your soul.
Think about how you can incorporate more peace into the coming week.
How will you cultivate your own dolce far niente?
Set a daily alarm on your phone if you need to. When the alarm goes off:
Maybe you’ll spend a few minutes breathing and relaxing your shoulders
Go for a walk
Stretch your body
Take a nap
Take a bath
Feel gratitude for your coffee, cup of tea, or cozy sweater - it could be anything
Put on a song and dance
Watch the birds, the clouds, or the leaves blowing in the breeze
Get some sunshine
Question:
If you could inherit Warren Buffet’s wealth but also have to inherit his age, 93, would you take it?
Most people would say no because we recognize what a gift time is. You have the gift of time. Reflect on how you’re using it. Are there places where you could add more self care?

I love Sunday mornings too! They're so peaceful and quiet. I like to go to the beach or a park full of trees and flowers.
